The Pieces

A Free Verse Confessional

by Jamo

Most everyone knows what a broken heart feels like. Does anyone stop to ask, "What have I done with the pieces?"

What you’ve stumbled onto are free verse Polaroids of a man in his mid-30’s about to get his heart shattered into The Pieces by a variety of women: one who found him through a classified ad, a Broadway touring company actress, various female friends in recovery, a dog walking beauty of a neighbor 16 years his senior, and an emotionally confused lesbian.

The Shards (free verse confessionals) ahead are primarily from the author’s creative archeological digs of 1998, with rarities ascribed to 1999 through 2005. Each vers libre is adjoined with a parallel entry from private journal volumes of the period, edited only to protect both the innocent and guilty involved.

As with many of the author’s creative projects, this one had to marinate until ready. A tiger print journal book given as a Valentine's Day present from a woman named Lisa nearly 30 years ago offered more than just blank pages. As curator of these memories, the author is curious to see where over a quarter century has left him following open-heart surgery without the benefit of emotional anesthesia. Some of the scars will be found on these pages. Some you’ll never see, nor know if they’ve healed. The rest belong to the author – and The Whole is for another time with a different pen.

"It's easy to look back as I'm sure Adam did once or twice concerning Eve and wonder why he took the apple from her in the first place. Ah, the fruit is so sweet. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it as much as I hated the pain of my heart breaking each and every time. At the end of the story, I can't say I didn't know what love is or how fragile the heart can be. God doesn't use duct tape to patch up the broken parts - The Pieces have to be loved back together, starting with Him, then self, finally others."

Here’s just a few of the shards included in The Pieces
